## Company flow

Public evidence, arranged around BASF's physical production system, the Verbund integrated-site model, rather than the corporate org chart. Unlike a licensing or franchise business, BASF SE and its subsidiaries typically hold direct operating control of chemicals-segment plants; the exceptions (joint ventures, a separately run energy business) are named, not assumed away.

01 · MATERIALS IN

#### Naphtha, natural gas & crude-derived feedstocks

Steam crackers at BASF's largest Verbund sites turn naphtha and natural gas liquids into the basic petrochemical building blocks (ethylene, propylene) that feed nearly every downstream BASF plant.

Public category signal

02 · MAKE

#### Six operating segments manufacture across the value chain

Chemicals and Materials run the base petrochemical and polymer plants; Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care, and Agricultural Solutions convert intermediates into formulated, higher-value products.

Company described

03 · PRODUCTS OUT

#### Petrochemicals, plastics, coatings inputs, ag chemicals

Ethylene derivatives, polyurethanes, engineering plastics, dispersions and pigments, catalysts, nutrition and care ingredients, and crop protection products, sold overwhelmingly to other manufacturers, not to end consumers directly.

Company described

04 · WASTE OUT

#### Verbund by-product reuse, plus TRI-reported residuals

BASF's stated design principle routes one plant's off-gas, steam, or by-product stream into another plant on the same site as feedstock or energy before it is counted as waste; U.S. TRI filings still show reportable releases and transfers at named facilities.

Verbund claim plus public TRI record

#### What is public now

Reporting segments Chemicals; Materials; Industrial Solutions; Surface Technologies; Nutrition & Care; Agricultural Solutions, plus an "Other" line covering corporate items, real estate, and the Wintershall Dea equity interest

Business model Direct manufacturer and formulator at Verbund and standalone sites; not a licensing or franchise structure, though named joint-venture and energy-business exceptions exist

Public plant signal 43 U.S. facilities matched to a BASF parent name in the 2024 U.S. TRI dataset; three (Freeport, TX; Geismar, LA; McIntosh, AL) carry enough public detail here to treat as candidate facility leads

Material question A named site, segment, and product line is the workable starting point: the six segments carry different feedstocks, customers, and regulatory exposure

#### What the public record tells us

**Verbund signal:** BASF's Verbund model links a small number of major integrated sites worldwide. Company material commonly cites six: Ludwigshafen (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium), Freeport (Texas), Geismar (Louisiana), Nanjing (China), and Kuantan (Malaysia), where by-product and energy streams from one plant become feedstock for the next. Verify the current count and site list in BASF's latest annual report.

**Joint-venture signal:** Not every Verbund site is wholly owned. BASF-YPC Co., Ltd. in Nanjing is a 50/50 joint venture with Sinopec; its production, waste, and offtake are a JV relationship, not a BASF-owned-and-operated one.

**Energy business signal:** Wintershall Dea, BASF's oil-and-gas exploration and production business, is a materially different business from chemicals manufacturing and has been reported under active restructuring, including divestment of German, Argentine, and other conventional E&P assets. Confirm current ownership status before treating any Wintershall Dea figure as current.

#### Regulatory and certification signals

Regulatory watchlist EU REACH & CLP, U.S. TSCA, EPA TRI/RCRA, PFAS-specific rules in the EU and U.S.

Certification families ISO 14001, ISO 50001, ISCC PLUS, Responsible Care

How to use this view Full detail sits in the Regulatory & innovation section: connect each framework to a named site and product before treating it as applicable

#### Innovation and recovery signals

Material innovation ChemCycling pyrolysis-oil feedstock, biomass balance mass-balance accounting, ecovio/ecoflex compostable polymers, battery cathode-active materials

Recovery pathways Verbund by-product-to-feedstock routing, precious-metal recovery tied to catalyst manufacturing

Scope of the material question Match segment, site, and grade separately. There is no single global BASF plant

## The Verbund: who actually controls the physical system

A parent brand is not a plant, and a Verbund site is not automatically wholly owned. BASF's production footprint spans wholly owned integrated complexes, a 50/50 petrochemical joint venture, and a separately run, restructuring energy business, each a different relationship type.

Relationship types kept separate

#### What a Verbund site is

BASF uses "Verbund" (German for "integration" or "linkage") as its term for co-locating production plants, energy generation, and logistics on a single site so that one plant's by-product, waste heat, or intermediate stream becomes the feedstock or energy input for the next plant, reducing raw-material use, transport, and emissions relative to standalone plants. Ludwigshafen, Germany is BASF's original and largest Verbund site, and is commonly described as the largest integrated chemical complex operated by a single company anywhere in the world, with on-site power generation, several hundred production plants, and its own internal pipeline and logistics network. Treat exact plant counts and site superlatives as company-reported description, not independently audited fact.

#### Control hierarchy

Parent

**BASF SE (XETRA: BAS; ADR: BASFY, OTC)** Ludwigshafen-headquartered chemicals group, organized into six operating segments; not an SEC periodic filer

Public parent Wholly owned Verbund sites

**Ludwigshafen, Antwerp, Freeport, Geismar** Company-reported as BASF-operated integrated production complexes in Germany, Belgium, and the United States

Owned and operated (company reported) 50/50 joint venture

**BASF-YPC Co., Ltd., Nanjing, China** Integrated petrochemical Verbund site jointly owned and operated with Sinopec

JV, shared operating control Distinct, restructuring business

**Wintershall Dea (oil & gas exploration and production)** Legally and operationally separate from BASF's chemicals manufacturing; reported divestment of conventional E&P assets in progress as of the most recent public reporting

Distinct business, ownership in flux: verify current status Toll, contract & strategic-supplier sites

**Third-party formulation, blending, and finishing capacity** Not itemized in current public source set; do not assume BASF operating control over any unnamed site

Not itemized publicly

#### Named Verbund and major production sites

| Site | Location | Relationship | Note |
|-|-|-|-|
| Ludwigshafen | Germany | Wholly owned (BASF SE) | Company describes as its largest and original Verbund site; roughly 200 production plants on one site (company reported, verify current count) |
| Antwerp | Belgium | Wholly owned subsidiary | Company-reported as BASF's largest Verbund site in Europe after Ludwigshafen |
| Freeport | Texas, United States | Wholly owned subsidiary (BASF Corporation) | U.S. Verbund site; TRI facility lead present in this brief (methanol, 2024) |
| Geismar | Louisiana, United States | Wholly owned subsidiary | TRI facility lead present in this brief (methanol, 2024) |
| Nanjing | China | 50/50 joint venture (BASF-YPC Co., Ltd., with Sinopec) | JV production and waste streams are not BASF-owned-and-operated by default |
| Kuantan | Malaysia | Wholly owned subsidiary | Company-reported Verbund site serving Asia-Pacific specialty-chemicals demand |
| McIntosh | Alabama, United States | Subsidiary (legacy Ciba specialty-chemicals site, acquired 2009) | TRI facility lead present in this brief; not described by BASF as a Verbund site |

This list is illustrative, not exhaustive. BASF operates production sites in far more locations than the Verbund complexes named here. Confirm the current site directory and ownership status in BASF's own investor materials before using any single site in a decision.

## Products leaving the system

Publicly described segment product families. BASF sells almost entirely to other manufacturers and formulators. The customer, not the consumer, is the buyer for nearly everything on this tab.

Company's most consumer-facing-adjacent segment, still B2B in practice

#### Not a products segment

**Wintershall Dea (oil & gas exploration and production)** is reported separately from BASF's six chemicals-and-materials segments and is not a source of the products described on this tab. Do not fold its production or reserves into a BASF "products out" picture.

#### Product and application signal

Segment and product-family descriptions are public. Exact grade-level formulation, plant-level output volume, and customer-specific specification are not publicly disclosed. Treat any specific figure as directional unless sourced to a named BASF technical data sheet or filing.

## Materials entering the system

Category-level feedstock families connect BASF's Verbund cracker operations to its six downstream segments. Most of the tonnage entering a BASF site is intermediate chemistry, not finished ingredients.

Public category signals

| Material family | Public signal | Transition lens |
|-|-|-|
| Naphtha & natural gas liquids (steam-cracker feedstock) | Company disclosed category | Feedstock diversification: bio-naphtha and pyrolysis-oil blending into existing crackers |
| Basic petrochemicals produced on-site (ethylene, propylene, benzene) | Verbund-internal, largely not purchased externally | Internal Verbund flow, not an external material-substitution target |
| Metals & catalysts (platinum-group metals) | Company disclosed category (Surface Technologies) | Precious-metal recovery and recycling loops tied to catalyst and battery-materials manufacturing |
| Agricultural & nutrition raw materials (fermentation feedstocks, plant extracts, minerals) | Company disclosed sourcing programs | Bio-based and fermentation-route feedstock substitution |
| Recycled & bio-based feedstocks (pyrolysis oil, biomass balance inputs) | Company reported (ChemCycling, biomass balance approach) | Direct chemical-recycling and mass-balance certification angle |

#### Financial scale context

~€65.3B FY2024 BASF Group sales (company reported, not an SEC figure) provides scale context for the group's total feedstock and raw-material purchasing. It is not a materials-purchasing figure broken out by feedstock family, and BASF does not publicly itemize naphtha or natural-gas volumes by site.

#### Material transition focus

The practical comparison set: pyrolysis-oil-fed crackers under the ChemCycling and biomass-balance programs, bio-based monomer routes, and precious-metal recovery from spent catalysts, each evaluated at the named site and product-line level, not the parent-company level.

## Packaging chemicals sold into other companies' packaging

BASF is overwhelmingly a B2B intermediate-chemicals company; it does not manufacture consumer packaging itself. Its packaging-relevant footprint is the dispersions, coatings, and biodegradable-polymer chemistries it sells to converters, brand owners, and packaging manufacturers, the reverse of a packaged-goods company's packaging section.

Chemicals-into-packaging signal, not BASF's own packaging

#### Dispersions & adhesive raw materials

Acrylic and styrene-butadiene dispersions used in paper, board, and flexible-packaging coatings and adhesives, consumed by BASF's customers' packaging lines, not by BASF's own.

#### Compostable & biodegradable polymers

ecovio and ecoflex are BASF-reported certified-compostable polymer resins sold to packaging converters as an alternative to conventional plastic film and coated paper.

#### Barrier & functional coatings

Specialty chemistries supplied to packaging manufacturers to improve barrier, grease-resistance, or recyclability performance of paper- and film-based packaging.

#### Chemical-recycling feedstock (ChemCycling)

Pyrolysis oil from plastic waste is blended into BASF's Verbund cracker feedstock, producing mass-balance-certified circular versions of base chemicals that can flow back into packaging resin supply chains.

#### S6 · BASF ChemCycling

BASF describes chemical-recycling feedstocks, certified mass balance, and the boundary that recycled feedstock is attributed rather than measurable in the final product.

[6]

#### Reading this tab correctly

**BASF is a packaging-materials supplier, not a packaged-goods company.** Exact volumes sold into packaging applications are not broken out publicly at the segment or site level. Treat any specific tonnage claim here as directional. A named converter or brand-owner customer, not BASF's parent scale, is the workable starting point for a packaging-chemistry opportunity.

## Reported residual, water & climate signals

2024 TRI data gives a facility-level, U.S.-only view. Water and climate figures come from company sustainability disclosure, not a government registry.

Parent-name TRI match plus company-reported ESG data

#### U.S. TRI facility leads (parent-name match, unresolved)

| Facility | TRI ID | Reported chemical | 2024 total quantity |
|-|-|-|-|
| BASF Corp, Freeport Site, Freeport, TX | 77541BSFCR602CO | Methanol | 76,935,920 lb |
| BASF Corp, Geismar, LA | 70734BSFCRRIVER | Methanol | 43,522,214 lb |
| BASF Corp, McIntosh, AL | 36653CBGGYGEIGY | Methanol | 25,621,939 lb |

All three are candidate facility leads from parent-name matching against 2024 U.S. TRI records. Excluded from any owned/operated plant count until ownership and operating control are verified. **Freeport site note:** the 2024 TRI record for this facility ID also carries parent-name matches to BASF SE and to Yara Freeport LLC, a signal of a co-located or shared-infrastructure arrangement that needs facility-level confirmation before assuming single-owner control. **McIntosh site note:** facility code carries a legacy Ciba-Geigy designation, consistent with BASF's 2009 acquisition of Ciba's specialty-chemicals business.

#### National TRI footprint (2024, aggregate across 43 matched facilities)

Facilities matched to BASF parent name 43

On-site release (aggregate) 220,109,261 lb

Total transferred off-site (aggregate) 16,926,628 lb

Recycled off-site (aggregate) 164,478,407 lb

Treated (aggregate) 27,188,931 lb

Energy recovery (aggregate) 10,330,777 lb

Disposal (aggregate) 1,694,814 lb

**Column-level TRI categories require verification** against the EPA's own schema before this breakdown is used in a compliance or procurement context. Treat the totals as reported across all 43 matched facilities nationally; treat the per-category assignment and the three named facilities above as a partial, unresolved subset of that total.

#### Water stewardship

BASF reports water withdrawal, discharge, and site-level water-risk assessment (using tools such as the WWF Water Risk Filter) in its annual sustainability disclosure, with a stated ambition to implement water-management plans at sites identified as high-risk. Exact global withdrawal figures and site counts are restated year to year. Confirm the current-year number in the latest Sustainability Report before citing it.

#### Climate commitment

Company-reported target: net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, pursued in part through BASF's "Carbon Management" program: new low-emission production technologies, renewable power sourcing, and pilot projects for electrically heated steam-cracker furnaces at Verbund sites. Interim reduction targets and baseline years have shifted in company reporting; verify the current figure in the latest annual/sustainability report before citing a specific percentage.

#### Scope limitation

TRI parent-name matching only reaches U.S. facilities filed under a BASF corporate name. Verbund by-product reuse is designed to keep material inside the site as feedstock or energy rather than reporting it as waste, but that internal reuse volume is not separately quantified anywhere in this source set. It is a structural claim, not a measured offset.

## Regulatory watchlist, certifications & innovation signals

As one of the European Union's largest chemical manufacturers, BASF's dominant regulatory throughline is EU REACH; PFAS-specific rules and U.S. TSCA sit alongside it.

| Jurisdiction | Framework | Trigger / status |
|-|-|-|
| European Union | REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) | As a substantial EU manufacturer and importer of substances, registration, authorization, and restriction obligations apply per substance and per tonnage band |
| European Union | CLP Regulation | Classification, labeling, and packaging obligations across BASF's substance and mixture portfolio |
| United States (federal) | TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act) | Chemical inventory, reporting, and EPA risk-evaluation obligations for substances manufactured or imported into the U.S. |
| United States (federal) | TRI, RCRA | Facility-level chemical release reporting and hazardous-waste management for matched U.S. sites |
| Global / multiple | PFAS-specific restrictions (EU proposed universal PFAS restriction; U.S. state and federal PFAS rules) | BASF has publicly reported exposure as a manufacturer and user of certain fluorochemistries in specific product lines, and has been named among multiple chemical manufacturers in U.S. PFAS-related litigation; scope of BASF-specific liability and named products is not independently verified in this source set |

Regulatory applicability has not been adjudicated per site, product, or jurisdiction here. This is a watchlist, not a legal conclusion.

#### Certification families in play

Certificate number, site scope, and current expiry are not verified here. Certification-family relevance does not prove an active, in-scope certificate at any named site.
