Common questions

What this is, and what is actually in it.

What is Material Transition?
Material Transition is a supplier-intelligence platform for sustainable materials, built by ALT LABS. It aggregates industrial supplier, material, certification and facility data into one searchable layer, so questions like "who makes this material, where, and what regulation touches it" become lookups instead of research projects.
What data does Material Transition actually hold?
The platform holds 120K+ supplier records, 170K+ material records with 1.1M+ properties, 112K+ certified product records, 197K+ certification records, and 2.5M+ production facilities across 224 countries.
Which countries does supplier coverage include?
Supplier records cover the United States and Canada only. The facility and emissions layers are international, but those are different datasets — describing supplier coverage as global would misstate what the product holds.
Who uses Material Transition?
Packaging, sustainability, materials and procurement leads at brand owners and manufacturers, plus the consultancies advising them. The common thread is needing to answer a question about a physical product — what it is made of, who supplies it, and which rules apply — with evidence attached.
How does Material Transition handle regulatory data?
Every regulatory flag is a record from a published list, retrieved with its source URL and listing date. Nothing is modelled, inferred or predicted. Absence of a flag means not yet identified in the lists covered — never that a material is cleared.
Can I check my own materials without an account?
Yes. The free Restricted Substance Exposure Check takes a pasted material list and returns which substances carry regulatory flags, in which jurisdictions, and what is due when. It runs entirely in the browser, needs no account, and nothing is uploaded.
