Clean Harbors, Inc.

Clean Harbors' 2025 Sustainability Supplement reports 1.9 million metric tons of materials recycled in 2024. The company separately says it managed nearly 400 million combined gallons of used oil, solvents and wastewater for customers. That gallon figure spans distinct liquid streams and does not mean every gallon became a recycled product. The company's Safety-Kleen description documents a used-oil collection and re-refining loop that produces recycled lubricants, while its solvent programs can recycle spent solvents to a customer's specification. The public summary does not establish current grade-level output, host facility, customer allocation or open volume.

The 2024 recycling number is broad

Clean Harbors reports 1.9 million metric tons of materials recycled in 2024. It also reports nearly 400 million combined gallons of used oil, solvents and wastewater managed for customers. The second figure is handled liquid volume, not recovered product. The public summary does not separate each liquid's input, recycled output, disposal route or end market.

Two closed-loop paths deserve separate specs

Safety-Kleen describes collecting used motor oil and re-refining it into recycled lubricant products. Clean Harbors also describes tolling programs that recycle spent solvents to customer specifications and return them. These are distinct product routes with different feedstock, quality and customer ownership boundaries. A service description alone does not establish current output or third-party availability.

Qualify output, not service capability

For a sourcing decision, request the named operating plant, feedstock acceptance window, product grade, analytical certificate, process losses, recycled yield, destination and monthly uncommitted volume. Keep hazardous-waste destruction and treatment services separate from material recovery. Do not reuse older used-oil totals as current figures.

Material Transition editorial interpretation

Select used oil, a named solvent loop or another industrial stream. For re-refined oil, request product grade, test certificate, current specification, blend status, plant and monthly volume. For solvents, identify the customer's input chemistry and required return specification. For any stream, separate managed volume from recovered output and confirm current uncommitted supply.
