OCI

OCI's disclosed circular-material lane is specific: recovered carbon black made from waste-plastic pyrolysis oil. The next decision is whether feedstock, certification and downstream grade requirements can stay aligned at commercial quality.

Material inputs to resolve

Advanced chemicals, basic chemicals, carbon chemicals and energy materials

OCI's 2025 Integrated Report says recycled waste-vinyl oil from high-temperature pyrolysis is used in carbon-black manufacturing at its Gwangyang and Pohang plants, and reports 1,783 tons of recycled oil used in 2025. OCI says the carbon-black products maintain ISCC PLUS certification, and it identifies Saehan Recycle as the acquired source of pyrolysis oil from waste plastic film and packaging. Public sources do not disclose grade allocation, customer approval or a new offtake.

Open Feedstock, quality and customer qualification

  • Waste-plastic pyrolysis oil from Saehan Recycle
  • Chemical feedstocks and energy inputs
  • Certification, traceability and quality-control records

Outputs and residuals to resolve

  • Recovered carbon black grades
  • Advanced chemicals and materials
  • Nonconforming feedstock and process residuals requiring controlled treatment

First decision: Build one traceable carbon-black lane from waste-plastic input through pyrolysis oil, plant certification, grade specification and a named downstream application.

Portfolio

OCI identifies basic chemicals, carbon chemicals and energy solutions in its 2025 report.

Circular asset

The company says it is increasing recovered-carbon-black grades made from waste-plastic pyrolysis oil sourced from subsidiary Saehan Recycle.

Certification evidence

OCI says Gwangyang carbon black received ISCC PLUS certification in 2023 and Pohang carbon black in 2024.

Evidence boundary

The public record supports the asset, route and certification statements. It does not identify volume, batch performance, downstream customer or contracted supply.

Decision boundary

OCI has a real circular-material narrative only to the extent that waste-plastic pyrolysis oil, certification and recovered-carbon-black quality remain connected. Break that chain and the story becomes a claim. Keep it intact.

This is a public screening map. It separates company-disclosed flows from open qualification work. It does not convert a destination into a buyer or an announced ambition into operating capacity.

Three defensible entry lanes

Trace the Saehan-to-carbon-black loop

The disclosed subsidiary relationship gives this lane a specific physical starting point.

Next evidence: Waste-plastic input criteria, pyrolysis yield, oil specification and transfer documentation.

Use certification as a control, not a conclusion

ISCC PLUS can support traceability, but it does not by itself establish application performance or commercial availability.

Next evidence: Certificate scope, chain-of-custody method, product grade and batch records.

Qualify one downstream grade

Recovered carbon black succeeds only when it clears a real compound or product specification.

Next evidence: TDS, COA, formulation trial, performance delta and customer approval.

Evidence register

Source hierarchy: filings and company disclosures first. The brief states what those sources support and leaves the unresolved plant, grade, permit, buyer and mass-balance questions explicit.

Material Transition editorial interpretation

The next useful working session starts with: Build one traceable carbon-black lane from waste-plastic input through pyrolysis oil, plant certification, grade specification and a named downstream application.
